We're not just promoting Spanish programs for teachers, but for anyone that finds themselves in a situation where knowing Spanish would improve their situation. There are many job fields or professions where knowing some Spanish would certainly improve your job skills. Some examples are: foremen, managers, policemen, firemen, the medical profession, customer service ... just to name a few. We understand why you need to know some spanish. We are retired secondary school teachers in the Houston, Texas area and as you can imagine we've had many Hispanic students in our classes. As a teacher in Texas, we are required to contact the parents of all students who are failing in our classes. It's amazing, the number of parents that can't speak English. Needless to say, many teachers spend hours trying to speak with people who can't understand English. These teachers need to learn at least enough Spanish to communicate with Hispanic parents. All parents need to be informed when their child is having academic,  behavioral, or social problems at school.

Many students speak limited or no English at all. It seems a little ridiculous that teachers can't communicate with the students in their classes. There is no way a teacher can teach students Science, or English or any subject - if the kids can't understand English.  Teachers need to learn some basic Spanish.
